Cultural Sociology (MSc Sociology)

Introduction

Cultural Sociology is a track of the Master's programme in Sociology. It deals with the study of culture both in the broad sense (lifestyles, mentalities, value orientations) and in the more specific sense of referring to cultural fields like the arts, popular music, and organized religion. Culture is approached sociologically as rooted in, emerging from and impacting on social (economic, political) relations and group processes. Moreover, culture is conceived in dynamic terms, and viewed in the context of social changes.

The programme trains students in sociology, in particular cultural sociology, at a high academic level. The combination of empirical studies with theoretical reflection provides the intellectual tools and skills that students need to analyse and understand complex social and cultural issues.

Studying Cultural Sociology (MSc) at the University of Amsterdam

The university buildings that house the programme's staff and class rooms are located in Amsterdam's vibrant city centre, which offers a host of opportunities to explore a diversity of (sub)cultures and participate in all kinds of ‘high' (art museums, theatre, opera etc.) and popular culture.

Cultural sociology is a well-established and successful specialization in the sociology programmes at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels, and an important field of research at the UvA. The programme's core staff are experienced scholars who combine teaching and research, investigate a variety of topics in cultural sociology (ranging from the sociology of humour to the dynamics of global art markets) and publish extensively.

As researchers they are part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). They have contacts with experts of the University of Amsterdam as well as other scholars in the Netherlands and abroad.

Cultural Sociology as a part-time programme

Part-time study is only possible in exceptional circumstances, upon submission and approval of a written request.
