As of September 2008, the Graduate School of Social Sciences has been founded as a merger of the graduate divisions of the following educational institutes:
- Amsterdams Instituut voor Maatschappijwetenschappen (AIM)
- Onderwijsinstituut Geografie, Planologie en Internationale Ontwikkelingsstudies (GPIO)
- International School for Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS).
