Graduate School of Social Sciences

The Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) is part of the University of Amsterdam. The GSSS offers Master's and advanced Master's programmes in Antropology, Political Science, Sociology, Human Geography, Planning and Development Studies both in Dutch and in English.

Stimulating learning environment

The School's ambition is to be a dynamic, multifaceted institution marked by high academic standards, an international atmosphere, and a vibrant ‘academic commons' with multiple public events.

The GSSS fosters an open and international intellectual atmosphere where students at all levels, academic staff and international scholars engage in debates, in seminars and in the class rooms. Good education for the Graduate School of Sciences includes positive student guidance, strict thesis supervision and adherence to deadlines.

Graduates qualifications

The Graduate School aims to ease the transition between the Master's and PhD level, deliver graduates with strong research skills to follow professional careers, and create a supporting environment with scholars excelling in a specified field of expertise.

Foundations of the GSSS

The Graduate School was founded in January 2009, building upon existing institutional structures. It encompasses all the Master's and Research Master's and - eventually - PhD training programmes previously located in several previous social sciences institutes, namely the Amsterdam Institute for Education in Social Sciences (AIM), Onderwijsinstituut Geografie, Planologie en Internationale Ontwikkelingsstudies (GPIO, or English abbreviation GPIDS) and the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences (ISHSS).
