Graduate School of Social Sciences

Orientation February 2012

On Friday 3 February from 16:00 onwards the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) officially welcomes the new students starting a Dutch or English language Master's programme as of February 2012.

ERC Advanced Grant: Globalization, Sports and the Precarity of Masculinity

Prof. Niko Besnier has received an ERC Advanced Grant for his multi-sited comparative ethnographic project that will investigate the migratory dynamics at play between selected developing countries and selected countries in the industrial world in three different sports, soccer-football, rugby union, and cricket.

The emigrant influence on native-country politics

Emigrants from politically unstable countries tend to maintain close ties with their country of birth. What influence do such - often lifelong - relationships have on political processes in those home countries? Dr Maria Koinova, a political scientist at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) recently received an ERC Starting Grant to answer this research question.

UvA scores high in global rankings for Social Sciences

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is ranked 40th in the Top 50 Social Sciences universities as assessed by Times Higher Education (THE). The UvA is the only continental European university on the global list.

Summer Programme on Urban Studies: International Housing, Policy and Planning

In this three week programme in July 2012 students will explore housing, planning and policy issues in European cities as well as consider how these apply in other regions of the world.

ERC laureate seeks to explain inequality better by examining homeownership

Sociologist Dr Caroline Dewilde, who was recently awarded an ERC Starting Grant, is investigating whether changes in homeownership may also explain the growing inequality.

UvA jumps into top 100 of Times Higher Education rankings

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) rose from 165th place to 92nd place in the World Universities Rankings 2011-2012 organised by Times Higher Education (THE). The UvA is one of four Dutch universities on the list.

Study Abroad Fair UvA – HvA 2011

The Study Abroad Fair UvA - HvA 2011 (Buitenlandmanifestatie UvA - HvA 2011) will take place on Wednesday, 5 October 2011 from 12.00 - 16.00 in the Leeuwenburg building, Weesperzijde 190 (next to Amstelstation).

Millions in EU grants for eleven UvA researchers

Eleven researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have been named as recipients of Starting Independent Researcher Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). With 11 grants awarded to researchers at the UvA, the UvA has the largest number of grant recipients of any Dutch university.

Call to submit for the ARC-GS National Prize for Best Social Science Master Thesis in Gender and Sexuality Studies 2011

To encourage and valorise advanced social science students working in the field and to celebrate the first year of existence, the 2011 ARC-GS Prize will award the best gender and/or sexuality studies master thesis in the social scientific disciplines in the Netherlands.

‘QS World University Rankings by Subject’: UvA 5 times best in the Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has the highest ranking of all Dutch universities in five fields of study according to the global QS World University Rankings by Subject, which were published on Tuesday, 5 July.

The Struggle to Belong

On July 7-9, the University of Amsterdam will host the annual conference of the Research Committee on Urban and Regional Development of the International Sociological Association. This is one of the largest gatherings of urban sociologists in the world and will host over 300 scholars from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America.

Article 'Private trouble, policy issue: people's noise annoyance and policy discourse' voted in top three

Christian Broer's article on the relation between policy discourses and problem perception in the context of aircraft noise was voted one of the three top articles of the peer reviewed journal 'Critical Policy Studies' (Routledge Publishers).

GSSS Information Desks and secretariats closed 9 June

New journal: Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions

Recently the first issue of a new peer-reviewed journal, published by Elsevier, has appeared: 'Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions'. It has been launched as a spin-off of the Knowledge Network of System Innovations and Transitions.

The Pantheon of Public Values

The focus on values in public governance has increased significantly in recent years. Mark Rutgers states in his inaugural lecture that normativity or the saturation of values in public governance should be a core issue. However, the idea that there is a clear distinction between facts and values is prevalent and obscures the fact that value research and the practice of governance are prescriptive.

The side effects of human rights-based HIV/AIDS care

Western aid workers provide preventive and general HIV and AIDS care all around the world. And, often, they convey their own political and moral ideas to patients and local aid workers. Anthropologist Jarrett Zigon will be studying the impact of these 'side effects' with funding from an NWO Vidi Grant.

New nationalism is sexually progressive

During the international conference entitled Sexual Nationalisms. Gender, Sexuality and the Politics of Belonging in the New Europe, more than eighty academics will come together to examine and discuss the relationship between sexuality and nationalism in the ‘new Europe’. The conference will take place on 27 and 28 January at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Orientation Programme for New Students

New students starting their Master's programme or undergraduate programme in February will be introduced to the University of Amsterdam through an orientation programme.

Relocation GSSS offices and Information Desk

The GSSS offices and Information Desk has been relocated from Prins Hendrikkade to Kloveniersburgwal on 17 January 2011. The computer room at Prins Hendrikkade has been closed from 15 December.

Vidi grants for fourteen outstanding UvA and AMC-UvA researchers

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a Vidi grant to fourteen researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA).

Europe facing the challenge of a rising multipolar world

China, India, Brazil, and other emerging economies are fast on their way to becoming leading players in the global economy. This may lead to the rise of a new multipolar world order. What effect will these developments have on the position and role of the European Union in the near future? This is one of the key issues to be addressed in a large-scale study conducted by 16 institutions and universities, the University of Amsterdam among them.

Children in lesbian families in the United States do not experience sexual or physical abuse by parents

Teenagers from lesbian families in the United States reported 0% sexual abuse by their parents or guardians. The study was conducted by Dr Nanette Gartrell and Naomi Goldberg of the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, and Dr Henny Bos from the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) department of Child Development and Education.

Veni grant for nineteen young researchers at UvA and AMC

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded nineteen young scientists, who have recently obtained a doctorate, a Veni grant for research at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA).

The science disciplines at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) were adjudged to be excellent by the CHE ExcellenceRanking 2010 which was published on Wednesday, 27 October.

The Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA) is to appoint a rector. This will fill an existing vacancy and add a fourth member to the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the HvA.

IMES research: strictly orthodox Muslims pose no threat to Dutch democracy

Researchers from the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) presented the results of the first study on the nature, extent and threat of Salafist (strictly orthodox Muslim) community in the Netherlands on Friday, 24 September.

To welcome and inform new international and Dutch students the Graduate School of Social Sciences organised an orientation meeting on 3 September 2010.

International study on the relationship between homeownership and pensions

Dr Caroline Dewilde, a sociologist at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), has been awarded a €210,000 grant to conduct an international study on how pension and housing policy decisions impact the income status of the elderly in welfare states.
