ERC Advanced Grant: Globalization, Sports and the Precarity of Masculinity
Prof. Niko Besnier has received an ERC Advanced Grant for his multi-sited comparative ethnographic project that will investigate the migratory dynamics at play between selected developing countries and selected countries in the industrial world in three different sports, soccer-football, rugby union, and cricket.

The emigrant influence on native-country politics
Emigrants from politically unstable countries tend to maintain close ties with their country of birth. What influence do such - often lifelong - relationships have on political processes in those home countries? Dr Maria Koinova, a political scientist at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) recently received an ERC Starting Grant to answer this research question.

Millions in EU grants for eleven UvA researchers
Eleven researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have been named as recipients of Starting Independent Researcher Grants from the European Research Council (ERC). With 11 grants awarded to researchers at the UvA, the UvA has the largest number of grant recipients of any Dutch university.

The Struggle to Belong
On July 7-9, the University of Amsterdam will host the annual conference of the Research Committee on Urban and Regional Development of the International Sociological Association. This is one of the largest gatherings of urban sociologists in the world and will host over 300 scholars from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America.

The Pantheon of Public Values
The focus on values in public governance has increased significantly in recent years. Mark Rutgers states in his inaugural lecture that normativity or the saturation of values in public governance should be a core issue. However, the idea that there is a clear distinction between facts and values is prevalent and obscures the fact that value research and the practice of governance are prescriptive.

The side effects of human rights-based HIV/AIDS care
Western aid workers provide preventive and general HIV and AIDS care all around the world. And, often, they convey their own political and moral ideas to patients and local aid workers. Anthropologist Jarrett Zigon will be studying the impact of these 'side effects' with funding from an NWO Vidi Grant.

New nationalism is sexually progressive
During the international conference entitled Sexual Nationalisms. Gender, Sexuality and the Politics of Belonging in the New Europe, more than eighty academics will come together to examine and discuss the relationship between sexuality and nationalism in the ‘new Europe’. Europe facing the challenge of a rising multipolar world
China, India, Brazil, and other emerging economies are fast on their way to becoming leading players in the global economy. This may lead to the rise of a new multipolar world order. What effect will these developments have on the position and role of the European Union in the near future? This is one of the key issues to be addressed in a large-scale study conducted by 16 institutions and universities, the University of Amsterdam among them.

Children in lesbian families in the United States do not experience sexual or physical abuse by parents
Teenagers from lesbian families in the United States reported 0% sexual abuse by their parents or guardians. The study was conducted by Dr Nanette Gartrell and Naomi Goldberg of the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, and Dr Henny Bos from the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) department of Child Development and Education.
