Summer programmes 

The Summer Institute at the Graduate School of Social Sciences in Amsterdam offers a variety of intensive summer courses and tailor made programmes (in cooperation with host universities abroad) in a variety of fields. All of our programmes are taught in English.

With over 10 years experience in programme development, the Summer Institute is capable of offering high quality short-term study abroad programmes at a reasonable cost. With insiders' knowledge of the city of Amsterdam and an impressive list of guest speakers and faculty, we have developed programmes that offer a truly authentic Amsterdam experience.

Winter programme

The Amsterdam Master's in Medical Anthropology (AMMA) is an advanced international study programme of the University of Amsterdam aimed at professionals in the medical field. We have several courses annually in January and February, which are custom made in cooperation with international scholars and chairs. AMMA is known, and internationally celebrated, for its variety of themes, high academic standard and impressive list of guest speakers.

Amsterdam Master's in Medical Anthropology (AMMA Winter School)

Medical Anthropology is a relatively young and dynamic field. It is the fastest growing specialization in cultural anthropology. The Amsterdam Master’s in Medical Anthropology (AMMA) organize each year custom made short courses of two weeks which are designed to offer students both overview and insight into the state of the art of medical anthropological research in five essential themes in health care. The courses are presented by (inter)national staff and renowned guest lecturers from different universities and the professional field and will take place in January and February. AMMA is known, and internationally celebrated, for its variety of themes, high academic standard and impressive list of guest speakers.

The AMMA Winterschool offers five executive modules:

- Gender, Reproductive and Sexual Health and Fertility
- AIDS in the 21st century: A Medical Anthropological Perspective
- Medicine and Human Rights in Cross-Cultural Perspective
- Children, Health and Well-being: a Cultural Perspective
- Culture, Psychology and Psychiatry

Because AMMA is an advanced Master aimed at at doctoral students, researchers, medical professionals and interventionists working in health related fields, our courses are constructed in such a way that the knowledge can immediately be applied in the work field.

Therefore, these courses also offer them an unique opportunity to exchange inter-cultural professional experiences, and to expand their network contacts.
