Studying at the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) offers you the chance to develop yourself in an international academic environment. You will encounter professors and students from all over the world, which stimulates intercultural exchange on an academic level. Furthermore, you will meet fellow international students, which gives you the opportunity to cultural exchange on a private level and create long lasting international friendships. Besides the curriculum of programmes on graduate and undergraduate level, the GSSS and Universiteit van Amsterdam also have a number of extra-curricular activities on offer:
The International Student Network (ISN) organises a variety of extra-curricular activities throughout the year such as excursions, drinks, parties, and (Dutch language) film viewings to provide additional opportunities for Dutch and international students to interact with each other. At the beginning of every semester the ISN organises an introduction programme for new international students as an orientation to the UvA and the city of Amsterdam, which lasts two to four days.
ISN and the students' union ASVA have created a website for student language exchange (SLE). SLE is a forum where you can pair up with other students to exchange your language. It is informal, free of costs, you receive private lessons, get to meet other students and learn a language at the same time. Website SLE:
Several times per year, the GSSS organises lectures, sometimes in co-operation with other organisations, such as - Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES)
- Amsterdam Institute for International Development (AIID)
- Amsterdam School for Social science Research (ASSR)
- Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS)
- International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)
- John Adams Institute
Check the GSSS agenda for more information.
The Universiteit van Amsterdam Sports Centre offers a wide variety of sports, ranging from outdoor sports as tennis, canoeing and field hockey to a great number of indoor sports such as fitness, karate and swimming. The sports can be practised at several locations throughout Amsterdam. The Universiteit van Amsterdam deliberately keeps the fees low to offer all students the opportunity to use its sports facilities.
CREA is the cultural organisation of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. It offers a wide range of activities and courses in music (classical, pop, jazz, world, etc.), theatre, dance, media, painting, photography and sculpture for a modest price. CREA also organises the Studium Generale, a programme of lectures and debates on science and culture. Most of the lectures and debates are held in Dutch, but some of them are in English.
On the UvA website, you can find interviews with non-Dutch students and video about student life at the University of Amsterdam.
