Research Master's Programmes

Graduate School of Social Sciences

Research Master's programmes are two-year programmes specifically designed for excellent students aiming for a career in research. Compared to our one-year Master's programmes, they offer a more in-depth study, including additional research methodology, skills training, as well as hands-on experience in the top research groups of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research. The programmes prepare students for writing a PhD thesis and an academic career, as well as for a research oriented career outside academia.

The Graduate School of Social Sciences offers three Research Master's programmes that prepare students for a PhD programme:

Programmes

Research Master International Development Studies

The Research Master in International Development Studies provides academic training at an advanced level with a focus on international development studies, as well as in research methodologies and skills. The Master's programme aims to prepare students for an academic career or a career in applied research.

Research Master in Social Sciences

Today's modern societies require flexible social scientists who are able to generate relevant knowledge about important social and cultural concerns. The Research Master's programme in Social Sciences is a two-year programme for motivated students with excellent academic records who wish to pursue a career in social science research in an academic setting or in private or governmental research institutes.

Research Master in Urban Studies

The MSc in Urban Studies deals with the complex reality of urban centres from a number of perspectives drawn from spatial planning, social and economic geography, and institutional approaches. Students of the programme have the opportunity to develop their own nationally comparative, fieldwork-based research projects in the field of Urban Studies. The curriculum includes a semester of study abroad, which is central to its internationally comparative approach.
